It all started from an idea discussed over lunch in February 1997 with some friends at Chicago Pizza in West Los Angeles. By April of the same year we had a plan and layout of our 1st issue but no cover and no name for our publication. Our mission was to provide a lifestyle resource to cover the Los Angeles music, pop culture and club scene. Plus highlighting and give recognition to unsigned bands of all genres since all other publications at the time turned away unsigned music artists and only covered artists signed to major labels. Our goal has always been to be distributed nationally. We had two names for the publication “Stomp” and “No Cover”. We decided on “No Cover” for 3 reasons. The first was that, at the time, we were a FREE zine distributed all over Los Angeles and eventually 100,000 copies per month all over the west coast to music stores, coffee shops and lifestyle locations. Second “No Cover” represents original music. Third, the name “Stomp” sucked.
It is our dedication to indie music that lead to highlighting some of music’s most talented by giving them their first-ever magazine cover.
